Bookworms won’t necessarily enjoy everything they read, just ask any bookworm about the books they never finished. That’s exactly what I did, and the responses I received were very excellent, with some pretty valid points made about several authors! These are some of the many books that our readers on this page couldn’t enjoy, no matter how many times they tried.
“Main Street by Upton Sinclair and Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Both of these books made me literally stop reading for about a year because I was afraid I would hate anything I picked up as much as I hated these. Also, I keep trying to get through The Portrait of Dorian Gray and I haven’t yet.”
“The Hunger Games. I read the first book, but I just couldn’t enjoy the story. There were too many questions, not enough answers, and the character of Katniss was just so hard to read through. Everyone else was more interesting.”
“The Lord Of The Rings series. I tried like hell to read the first one and couldn’t get past the first paragraph. I don’t care for the movies either.”
“The Scarlet Letter. It’s one of the only books that I have ever not finished. I had to write a book a report on it in high school, and my entire report was complaining about how slow and dragging that book was, with the least engaging plot lines I had ever read. I pretty much wrote a really crappy review for it instead of a book report, and I still managed to pull off a C on a book report that I didn’t even actually finish reading the book on!”
“Game of Thrones. Sorry George, I have suffered enough grief via fictional characters anyway!”
“It was the later Dune books for me. I loved the first two books, but the rest just totally lost me. Such a great universe, but I just didn’t care anymore.”
“Dante’s Inferno. I have tried like ten times to read it, and I have owned the books for about seven years now. There is also The Simarillion. I only attempted to read it once in middle school, but I only got fifty pages into it. There is also the Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini. Actually I read the first book in that series, Eragon, and totally loved it. But the rest of the books were such struggles to get through! I just could not get into a groove to get through the rest of the series. Also, anything that was required to be read for a class were so tough to get through! Sparknotes was my best friend in high school, and thank god my best friend had the same English teacher for our Honors English class. She got me through that class and was such a lifesaver.”
“Twilight. I sat in the library and tried to read the first page. I like to do this to make sure I want to actually get the book first. But I couldn’t get past even the first paragraph!”
“Jules Verne’s ‘From the Earth to the Moon’ took me ages actually finish. I love his books, but this one has characters that made me absolutely hate it.”
“Wicked. I tried three different times, and I did get further each time. But I still gave up for the last time less than half way through the book.”
“Sabriel by Garth Nix. I have tried reading it ever since the sixth grade. I couldn’t get past the first few chapters. It has haunted me since then. I tried reading it again in high school, but I still couldn’t.”
“Anything by Stephen King, if you cut out the boring parts of It or The Shining, each book would be no longer than Goosebumps!”
“The Things They Carried by who cares. I had to read it in college. I didn’t finish it. It is unnecessary in all ways, complete fiction that some people try really hard to make into nonfiction, and it contains more graphic things than even war necessitates. I still can’t get an image out of my head from the book. I am scarred, and I hate it.”
